Portrait Project
My inspiration for this project came from the artist David Sutherland (posted below) who did a project involving projecting one’s face onto sculptures or different people. They would makes faces or talk creating the illusion that whatever their faces were projected on were the bodies doing the talking. Obviously simply projecting one’s face on an object or someone else will be just the same as...
Portrait Artist
Miami photographer Alfred Mandini runs Kendall Portraits, a professional portrait business renowned for their photoshopping skills, so much so as to claim to be “digital surgeons.” I couldn’t copy photos from the website for obvious reasons, but here is the link. http://kendallportraits.com/digital-surgery-miami-retouch-photographer/
Portrait Artist
This is a Houston artist named David Sutherland who uses a rig to project people’s faces onto sculptures or other people. I’m sort of taking this idea without using a projector, just transparencies that the subject of the photo will wear as a mask. http://www.instructables.com/id/Texas-Big-Face-3D-Face-Projection-How-To/
Portrait Photographer/Technique Not Explored in...
Kirilian photography is a way of taking pictures popular in New Age circles. The term actually refers to two different techniques. One is a pure photogram where items are placed on an electrified plane and the film exposes through small “corona discharges” of the field interacting with the object. This were used as early as 1939 and was used by various scientists throughout the...
Post-Crit Trace
Many people thought the shots were intensely photoshopped while a few had an idea they were under blacklights from the CSI aspect. Many people commented on its science or forensic aspect, and Sarah thought this had to do with many scientific photos’ aim to reveal an unseen aspect, such as the texture of things revealed by the UV light. We discussed the importance of these being referential...
Project 4: The Trace
Artist Statement: For this project I started experimenting with taking photos of this under black lights. My interest was in the UV wavelength’s ability to pick up things that aren’t obvious to the naked eye. I began shooting things that I knew had substances such as blood that supposedly fluoresced under black lights quickly found that the claim was probably exaggerated by shows...

Photo a Day for Six Years
This guy named Noah took a picture of himself everyday for six years with roughly the same framing and expression. Thought it sort of related to the whole “trace” idea in the sense of following changes in oneself. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6B26asyGKDo&feature=related
Tim's Blacklight Photo Gallery
I’m interested in photographing things under a black light to observe the trace elements or fluids left behind, so I thought it would be interesting to research it. This is a gallery of stock photos taken under a black light. The website doesn’t allow you to copy photos, but here’s the link.

Post-Crit
Being such a conceptual piece most people commented on the idea or asked questions about the particulars of my experience rather than taking the image apart compositionally. The reaction was shock and laughter. The juxtaposition of both sets made sense to people and we discussed how something like this could be implimented into a gallery space. We settled on the idea of having the prints there...
Photo Project 3- Artist Statement/Essay
I took a few liberties with this project, so I feel the need to write more than usual. The process and the gamut of feelings I experienced doing this paired with the way I saw myself and other people act through these websites is the core of why it’s interesting. The images I got feel more like travel photos than art photos because of this.
At the end of class two Mondays ago Sarah talked about...
Post-Crit Project #2
The feedback was mostly positive. Many people mentioned more of a sense of anticipation or worry than jumping to the word anxiety. Sarah commented that the blank-middled X-style composition helped keep things off-balance and that the use of the frame was effective in the stove, hair loss, and pregnancy scare photos. Some people felt that the hand was out of place in the hair loss photo or perhaps...

Artist Statement
My choice of subject came after a bit of a struggle. At first I was only concerned with the body language and movement of someone experiencing anxiety, but I couldn’t get enough variation or the focus I wanted to. I settled on four different pictures, each with a sense of narrative. An active frame is important in almost all of them. In the pregnancy scare photo the frame obscures both figures,...
"What makes a great photo?" Response
“Specifically, the example photograph reveals (through extremely long term exposure) an accumulation of moments that in total are more like a memory. The technique Wesely applies in long exposures (see also his portrait series) goes beyond the immediate visual detail. There is a kind of discord / dichotomy that I like about them. I like the passage of time collapsed into a...
Project 2: Anxiety
“Anxiety is a psychological and physiological state characterized by cognitive, somatic, emotional, and behavioral components. These components combine to create an unpleasant feeling that is typically associated with uneasiness, fear, or worry. It is a generalized mood condition that occurs without an identifiable triggering stimulus. As such, it is distinguished from fear, which occurs...
Critique for Project #1
Some people liked the ambiguity of the photos as well as the color scheme. I didn’t think the sets of photos necessarily went together until i put them up; however, it was pointed out that the curves, focus on light, and color scheme (black & white, pink & white) meshed well. My paper towel photo was decided to be the weakest of the bunch. The bars of gray, white, and black at the...
